In order for our mission to be sustainable and reproducible, we must pass along to others the knowledge, skills and values that will enable them to serve.

Dwell in the Word: Matthew 28:18-20

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Reflect on those who have mentored you in your life. Did the mentoring take place to teach you a life skill or a workplace skill? Describe the experience in three words?

Have you had the chance to mentor someone? Was it a good experience for the person you mentored?

Spend some time reflecting on the message this week and these additional Scriptures about why we are called to mentor.

  • 2 Timothy 2:2 “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”
  • Philippians 4:9 “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.”

We often seek out spiritual mentors to help integrate our identities into the life that Jesus hopes for us. Our hope is to become more Christ-centered and make choices that reflect Jesus. We are able to serve better, give more and do the important work we are called to with greater integrity.

How to FIND a mentor:

  • Start by asking God to provide someone who could walk you through a season of life. We believe that God loves the people he created and wants to give them good things—especially those they ask for.
  • Ask close friends and family who know you well if they might suggest someone you can ask.

How to BE a mentor:

  • Start by asking God to work on your heart so you might be ready to walk with someone during a season of life. THEN, pray that God might show you someone whom you could invest in to encourage, pray with and spend time. It might be someone at work or someone you serve with.
