Ecclesiastes: Chapter 7

This chapter reads very much like one of the chapters from proverbs composed of many short truths. The teacher expounds on two main themes in this chapter. The first is the value of hard times. Certainly we all enjoy a party and when times are good life seems less complicated. But how much do we grow and learn during such times? From difficult times we learn our life lessons and gain wisdom to deal with the future. God has indeed made both the good and the bad (vs.14).

The value of wisdom is the overall theme of the rest of the chapter. Wisdom is like an inheritance (vs. 11), it will help preserve life (vs. 12), and it provides power (vs. 19). Wisdom gives us discernment as to when to speak and when to listen (vs. 21-22) and it brightens our appearance (chap. 8:1). Knowledge and capability are important, but wisdom is the asset that allows us to put our gifts to good use.

Key Verse:
“Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing and benefits those who see the sun.” ~ Ecclesiastes 7:11

Questions to ponder:

  • What have you learned from a recent difficult situation?
  • How have you seen God work in your life through these difficult times?
  • In what ways have you demonstrated wisdom?
  • What situation are you now facing that you need God to give you wisdom?
